では、 「図書館はありません」 と否定したいときや、 「図書館はありますか」 とたずねたいときは、 どうすればよいだろうか。

見慣れない There is ... という形でも、 否定文と疑問文の作り方は、 実はすでに学んだ be動詞の文 と同じである。
否定文：be動詞のあとに not を置く。
疑問文：be動詞を文の先頭に出す。
今回は、 There is / There are ... の否定文・疑問文と、 そのときに関係する some / any の使い分けを整理していこう。
There isn't ... は、is のあとに not を置いて作る
There is ... を否定文にするには、 is のあとに not を置く。
There is a pen on the desk.
机の上にペンが一本あります。
There is not a pen on the desk.
机の上にペンが一本もありません。
is not は、 isn't と短くすることができる。
There isn't a convenience store near my house.
私の家の近くにコンビニはありません。
There isn't a cat under the table.
テーブルの下に猫はいません。
複数の人や物を表す There are ... でも、 作り方は同じである。 are のあとに not を置く。
There are some books on the desk.
机の上に本が何冊かあります。
There are not any books on the desk.
机の上に本は一冊もありません。
are not は、 aren't と短くすることができる。
There aren't any students in the classroom.
教室に生徒は一人もいません。
There aren't any apples in the box.
箱の中にりんごは一つもありません。
大切なのは、 There のあとにいきなり not を置くのではなく、 文の中にある is / are を否定するということである。
There is not a book on the desk.
There are not any books on the desk.
→ be動詞のあとに not を置く。
Is there ...? は、is を文の先頭に出して作る
There is ... を疑問文にするには、 is を文の先頭に出す。
There is a library near here.
この近くに図書館があります。
Is there a library near here?
この近くに図書館はありますか。
これは、 以前学んだ This is a book. の疑問文と同じ動きである。
This is a book.

There is a book on the desk.
→ Is there a book on the desk?
There is ... の文には is というbe動詞が入っているので、 一般動詞の疑問文のように Do や Does を使う必要はない。
Is there a park near the station?
駅の近くに公園はありますか。
Is there a computer in this room?
この部屋にコンピューターはありますか。
答えるときは、 質問の there is を使って、 次のように答える。
Is there a park near the station?
— Yes, there is.
— No, there isn't.
駅の近くに公園はありますか。
— はい、あります。／いいえ、ありません。
ここで、 Yes, it is. とは答えないことに注意したい。 Is there ...? は、 「それが〜ですか」と物の正体をたずねる文ではなく、 「〜が存在しますか」と存在をたずねる文だからである。
Is this your bag?
— Yes, it is.
→ この物があなたのかばんかをたずねる。
Is there a bag on the chair?
— Yes, there is.
→ いすの上にかばんが存在するかをたずねる。
Are there ...? では、some が any になることに注意する
複数の人や物が存在するかをたずねるときは、 Are there ...? を使う。
There are some books on the desk.
机の上に本が何冊かあります。
Are there any books on the desk?
机の上に本が何冊かありますか。
答え方は、 単数の Is there ...? と同じ考え方である。
Are there any books on the desk?
— Yes, there are.
— No, there aren't.
机の上に本が何冊かありますか。
— はい、あります。／いいえ、ありません。
ここでは、 肯定文の some が、 疑問文では any になっている。
There are some students in the library.
図書館に何人かの生徒がいます。
Are there any students in the library?
図書館に生徒は何人かいますか。
There aren't any students in the library.
図書館に生徒は一人もいません。
some は、 何人か・何冊かが存在することを肯定して述べる文で よく使われる。 一方、 any は、 何人か・何冊かが存在するかまだ分からない疑問文や、 一人も・一冊も存在しない否定文で よく使われる。
肯定文：There are some chairs in the room.
疑問文：Are there any chairs in the room?
否定文：There aren't any chairs in the room.
以前、 I have some books. と Do you have any books? で学んだ some / any の使い分けが、 There are ... の文でもそのまま生きてくる。
「その図書館」ではなく、「図書館があるか」をたずねる
最後に、 Is there a library near here? と、 よく似た Is the library near here? を比べてみよう。

この近くに図書館はありますか。

その図書館はこの近くにありますか。
一つ目の文では、 近くに図書館という施設が存在するかどうかをたずねている。 どの図書館かは、 まだ話題になっていない。
二つ目の文では、 the library と言っているので、 すでに話し手と聞き手が分かっている図書館について、 その場所が近いかをたずねている。
A: Is there a library near here?
B: Yes, there is. It is next to the station.
A：この近くに図書館はありますか。
B：はい、あります。駅の隣です。
A: Where is the city library?
B: The library is next to the station.
A：市立図書館はどこですか。
B：その図書館は駅の隣です。
この違いは、 前回学んだ There is a book. と The book is ... の違いと同じである。
まとめると、
否定文は、be動詞のあとに not を置く。
There isn't a library near here.
There aren't any bookstores near here.
疑問文は、be動詞を文の先頭に出す。
Is there a library near here?
Are there any bookstores near here?
短い答えには、there is / there are を使う。
Yes, there is. / No, there isn't.
Yes, there are. / No, there aren't.
複数の肯定文では some、 否定文・疑問文では any がよく使われる。
There are some books.
Are there any books? / There aren't any books.
There is / There are ... は、 特殊な文のように見える。 しかし、 否定文や疑問文を作るときには、 すでに身につけてきた be動詞のルール をそのまま使えばよい。
