では、 本があるかどうかではなく、 何冊あるのか をたずねたいときは、 どう言えばよいだろうか。
How many books are there on the desk?
机の上に本が何冊ありますか。
この文では、 これまで学んだ二つの仕組みが組み合わさっている。
How many books
→ 何冊の本
are there on the desk?
→ 机の上にありますか
つまり、 How many + 名詞の複数形 で数をたずね、 そのあとに are there ...? を続ければ、 「ある場所に〜がいくつありますか」 という質問を作ることができる。
今回は、 How many books are there on the desk? の組み立て方を確認しながら、 すでに学んだ How many books do you have? との違いも整理していこう。
How many books are there ...? は、数をたずねる there構文である
まず、 答えになる文から考えてみよう。
There are three books on the desk.
机の上に本が三冊あります。
この文で、 知りたいのが three の部分なら、 「何冊の本」とたずねる How many books を使う。

さらに、 質問なので、 There are ... の are を there の前に出す。
There are three books on the desk.
→ How many books are there on the desk?
語順を並べると、 次のようになる。
How many + books + are there + on the desk?
いくつの 本が ありますか 机の上に
日本語では、 「机の上に本が何冊ありますか」 と場所を先に言うことが多い。 しかし英語では、 たずねたい部分である How many books を文の先頭に置く。
How many chairs are there in this room?
この部屋にいすは何脚ありますか。
How many students are there in your class?
あなたのクラスに生徒は何人いますか。
How many parks are there near your house?
あなたの家の近くに公園はいくつありますか。
どの例でも、 「いす」「生徒」「公園」が ある場所に いくつ存在するか をたずねている。
How many のあとの名詞は複数形にする
How many は、 数えられるものの数をたずねる表現である。
答えが一つかもしれないとしても、 質問をする時点では、 その数はまだ分からない。 そこで、 How many のあとには、 数えられる名詞の 複数形 を置く。
How many books are there on the desk?
机の上に本は何冊ありますか。
How many people are there in the park?
公園に人は何人いますか。
How many classes are there on Monday?
月曜日に授業はいくつありますか。
book のように、 語尾に -s をつける名詞もあれば、 class → classes のように -es が必要な名詞もある。 また、 person → people のように形が大きく変わるものもある。
ここで、 疑問文の中のbe動詞が are になっていることにも注目したい。
There are three books on the desk.
→ How many books are there on the desk?
How many books と複数のものの数をたずねているため、 基本の形は How many books are there ...? となる。
How many books are there on the desk?
How many students are there in the room?
How many trees are there in the park?
How many books do you have? とは、何に注目するかが違う
How many books ...? という形は、 中1範囲でもすでに学んだ。
How many books do you have?
あなたは本を何冊持っていますか。
今回の文と並べると、 どちらも「何冊の本」とたずねているが、 そのあとが異なっている。

あなたは本を何冊持っていますか。
How many books are there in your bag?
あなたのかばんの中に本は何冊ありますか。
一つ目は、 you have books という一般動詞の文がもとになっている。 「あなたが何冊持っているか」 に注目する文である。
You have three books.
→ How many books do you have?
二つ目は、 there are books in your bag という存在を表す文がもとになっている。 「かばんの中に何冊存在するか」 に注目する文である。
There are three books in your bag.
→ How many books are there in your bag?
場面によっては、 結果として似た内容を聞いていることもある。 しかし、 文の組み立て方は同じではない。
have の文を質問にする
→ do / does / did を使う。
How many books do you have?
There is / are の文を質問にする
→ be動詞 を there の前に出す。
How many books are there on the desk?
つまり、 How many books の後ろに何を続けるかは、 もとの文が have の文 なのか、 there構文 なのかによって決まる。
過去に存在した数を聞くなら were there を使う
There is / There are ... は、 過去のことを述べるとき、 There was / There were ... になる。
There were five students in the library yesterday.
昨日、図書館に生徒が五人いました。
この数をたずねるなら、 現在の are there ではなく、 過去の were there を使う。
How many students were there in the library yesterday?
昨日、図書館に生徒は何人いましたか。
There were twelve eggs in the box.
→ How many eggs were there in the box?
箱の中に卵は何個ありましたか。
There were four chairs in the room last night.
→ How many chairs were there in the room last night?
昨夜、その部屋にいすは何脚ありましたか。
このときも、 How many のあとの名詞は複数形である。 変わるのは、 時制に合わせて are が were になる点である。
現在：How many books are there on the desk?
過去：How many books were there on the desk yesterday?
ここまでをまとめると、
ある場所に存在する物や人の数をたずねるときは、
How many + 名詞の複数形 + are there + 場所?
を使う。
How many books are there on the desk?
How many のあとの名詞は複数形にする。
How many students are there in your class?
do you have は、持っている数をたずねる。
are there は、ある場所に存在する数をたずねる。
How many books do you have?
How many books are there in your bag?
過去の数をたずねるなら、were there を使う。
How many students were there in the library yesterday?
How many books are there on the desk? は、 How many と There is / There are ... を別々に覚えるだけでは作りにくい文である。
しかし、 「数を聞きたい」から How many books、 「机の上に存在する」から are there on the desk と考えれば、 文の形は自然につながる。
これで、 There is / There are ... の基本、 否定文・疑問文、 数をたずねる文まで整理できた。 次は、 すでに学んだ命令文を確認しながら、 中2で新しく扱う What a beautiful flower! や How beautiful! のような 感嘆文 へ進もう。
